Public schools open, but UFV and some private schools closed

Another 10 to 15 centimetres expected in Abbotsford by end of Tuesday

Abbotsford’s schools are open, but the University of the Fraser Valley and some private schools are closed, and many roads around the city are dicey after a dump of snow overnight.

Several inches of the white stuff fell in the first major snowfall of the year.

The following private schools have posted school closures for today on their websites:

– all campuses of Abbotsford Christian School;

– St. John Brebeuf Regional Secondary and its elementary school, St. James and St. Ann’s; and

– all Mennonite Educational Institute schools.

Private school Dasmesh Punjabi is open for the day.

Motorists are reminded to take care. As of 7 a.m., highway traffic in both directions is moving much slower than usual west of Abbotsford’s Sumas Way exit.

A snowfall warning remains in effect. Environment Canada says:

“A long period of snowfall with total amounts of 10 to 15 cm is expected.

“A second low pressure centre in as many days will give more snow to the South Coast beginning this afternoon and continuing into Tuesday morning. This second disturbance will spread snow to virtually the entire South Coast with heaviest amounts falling tonight. Total snowfall amounts will vary across the region with 10 to 15 cm falling in most areas with somewhat higher amounts possible on Vancouver Island.”
