The Town of Qualicum Beach council wants signage posted at the entrance of the Qualicum Beach cemetery reminding pet owners that dogs must be on a leash when visiting.
Coun. Teunis Westbroek made the motion that council passed at its regular council meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 13, following a report of dogs running loose in the cemetery and damaging displays and placed flowers.
On Jan. 2, a couple encountered a dog that chewed up Christmas decorations that were placed at their children’s gravesite. The pet owner walked away without offering an apology.

Westbroek said wants staff to be vigilant to prevent a similar incident. He pointed out there is a dedicated off-leash park for dogs right next to the civic centre.
“There is no need for people to have their dogs running around the cemetery,” said Westbroek. “It’s very disrespectful.”
Coun. Scott Harrison agreed with Westbroek, adding he is not ready to support a ban but would like pet owners to abide by town policy and rules.
“If you know your dog runs off, maybe don’t take them to the cemetery, please,” said Harrison.
