Qualicum Beach, Parksville advance voter turnout grows

Second day of voting sees even bigger numbers than first day, previous election

Voters came out in even greater numbers for the second day of advance voting in Qualicum Beach and Parksville, exceeding the first advance vote on Oct. 10 and last elections’ numbers.

The second day of advance voting took place on Wednesday, Oct. 17, and saw 1,248 cast their vote in Qualicum Beach.

On Oct. 10, 880 people voted, up from 2014’s first advance vote day with 702 votes. In 2014, the second day had 1,020 people vote.

All-in-all, 406 more people showed up for advance voting days compared to 2014, said Qualicum Beach’s chief election officer, Heather Svensen.

There are 7,809 eligible voters in Qualicum Beach, up from 7,562 in 2014, Svensen said. Total votes cast in 2014 was 4,542 or about 60 per cent of eligible voters. Qualicum Beach tends to have a voter turnout in the 60 per cent range, said Svensen.

Parksville:

Parksville’s numbers are also up in all categories, with 1,066 people voting Oct. 17, and 569 on Oct. 10. That’s up from 301 and 505 on the first and second advance voting days in 2014.

There are approximately 9,000 eligible voters in Parksville, though, in 2014, 3,383 people voted. Nearly half that number has already voted this election.

RDN:

In the Regional District of Nanaimo, 480 voted on Oct. 17, fewer than the 693 who voted on Oct. 10. (These numbers include school district trustee votes as well in school districts other than SD69, where the trustees were acclaimed).
