Quesnel cannabis retail store public hearing rescheduled for Oct. 22

The City is proposing limiting the number of retail stores at five

Quesnel council has rescheduled the public hearing to deal with a zoning amendment that would limit the number of retail cannabis sales businesses in the city to five.

After an error in the publication of a required notice in the newspaper required that council cancel the public hearing that was originally set for Oct. 1, council postponed discussion on the zoning bylaw amendment and rescheduled the public hearing during Tuesday’s council meeting.

A public hearing for Zoning Amendment Bylaw No. 1874 will now be held Tuesday, Oct. 22 at 6 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers.

Council passed the first two readings for the proposed zoning amendment bylaw that would allow for a maximum of five retail cannabis stores within the city at its Sept. 17 meeting.

There are currently five retail cannabis stores whose applications have been accepted by city council — four private stores at two locations in South Quesnel and two in downtown Quesnel, as well as one government store in the West Park Mall.

When council began discussion placing a limit on the number of stores at the end of August, there were no new applications in progress.

At the Aug. 27 meeting where these discussions began, council heard that of the four private stores in process, three are in the process of renovation and construction, and only one has received approval in principle — and that one is not yet under construction or renovation. Approval in principle does not give the applicant final approval, as the LCRB still needs to inspect the store, explained Tanya Turner, the City’s director of development services.
