Quesnel refreshes residents on wildfire evacuation procedures

While there is no immediate danger, residents should be prepared for evacuation alerts and orders

The City of Quesnel is reminding residents to be prepared in the event a wildfire threatens the city.

While there is no threat to the city, wildfires are burning across the region, causing evacuation alerts and orders, including in 100 Mile House, and near Nazko First Nation.

The city linked to their evacuation route plan, emergency preparedness page and Prepared BC. They encouraged residents to sign up for the emergency alert system.

The city gave a list of recommendations for when residents are put under an evacuation alert or order. If an evacuation alert is issued, prepare to leave your home on short notice.

“Have your emergency kit and important documents ready to go, which should include things like insurance and personal papers, such as birth certificates,” a city news release reads.

The city suggested including several days clothing, medicine, items for children, mementos such as photos.

“Also, check in on any family, friends or neighbours who may need a helping hand due to mobility or other issues,” the release reads.

If an evacuation order is issued, residents must leave the area immediately.

“Local authorities will not ask you to leave without good reason, and failing to leave when asked by officials puts you and others at risk,” the release reads.

When asked to evacuate, wear a long-sleeved shirt, long pants and sturdy shoes, and gather at a designated reception centre. Close all doors and windows, and latch but don’t lock gates. If there is time, shut off water and electricity, but leave natural gas service on.

When arriving at an evacuation centre, sign-in with the registration desk, and then reach out to your out-of-area emergency contact.

Pets are not permitted in most public shelters, so they must be sent somewhere else.

Residents can sign up for the emergency alert system by visiting member.everbridge.net/index/453003085612292#/signup.
