Quesnel Mayor Bob Simpson says the North Cariboo Trail Inventory and Master Plan meetings went well on Oct. 26.
“We got lots of feedback on both inventory and strategy.
“We have the capacity [for the trail networks]. But we have a lot of work to do to develop them, sign them, map them, mark them, and get caught up.”
Regarding the Oct. 26 meetings, Simpson says most of the queries were around multi-use.
“We were deliberate from the beginning that we were trying to take a multi-use approach, but we also want to take a look at dedicated mountain bike use or running, and where would that be.
“But we also want to make sure where it makes sense for ATVs and snowmobiles, motocross and forests.”
Once the consultants comeback with the strategy, Simpson says it will be a matter of prioritization of where to “put our efforts and energy.”
He adds the inventory piece is capturing the near-to-Quesnel areas – within a 20-minute drive to get to the trail head.
“We’ve mapped that out, and the question now is as you move into the development stage, and find the money.”
Simpson says the key is to designate the trails, so they become recognized and are tagged on maps, so if mining or forestry go in, they have to consider the trail designation in whatever land management they do.
“Designation is key because some trails back onto private property and easements have to be worked out.
“If we don’t get the designation, it gets deconstructed or logged over and all the energy and money we’ve put in will be blown out.”
