Quick response from the Armstrong Spallumcheen Fire Department knocked down a potential wildfire Saturday.
Crews responded to a report of grass fire in the 4400 block of Schubert Road just after 5 p.m.
“The potential to have it spread was huge, as it always is at this time of year,” said fire chief Ian Cummings, in regards to the hot, dry conditions that permeate through the North Okanagan.
“The response time by our guys was excellent. We were assisted by members of the public and we were able to knock the fire down quickly.”
During the summer and on weekends, the Armstrong Spallumcheen volunteer department has a five-member team on standby, which guarantees a quick response.
The department has currently deployed one tender and two of its members to help fight wildfires near Clinton, in the south Cariboo.
The cause of the bush fire in Spallumcheen is undetermined.
“We couldn’t find evidence to what started it,” said Cummings. “It quite possibly could have been a cigarette but I can’t confirm that.”
