After Canada Post commenced a lockout last Wednesday, Golden residents were left unable to retrieve their mail, and of course their community newspaper.
After a string of strikes across the nation by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers, Canada Post made the decision to do a complete lockout. However, CBC was reporting on Monday, June 20, that the federal government was likely going to legislate CUPW back to work. That was expected to happen Monday afternoon.
“What Canada Post has done is irresponsible. The lockout traps mail in the system that has been paid for and shows disrespect for workers and customers alike,” a statement from the Canadian Union of Postal Workers said.
A calendar of rallies and demonstrations is posted on the CUPW website although Canada Post said they wish to resolve the issue as soon as possible. Canada Post has said that their Chief Executive Officer is ready to meet with the CUPW but the two have yet to agree on a negotiation.
In a recent press release, Canada Post explained that if they meet all of the demands of the CUPW, costs would raise and the company would be unable to deal with large issues like their lowered mail volumes. They also mention a $3.2-billion pension plan deficit that they would be unable to resolve. They point out that the strikes that began on June 3, cost the company almost $100-million.
Local members of the CUPW had a quiet demonstration outside of the post office during the week. They, along with the CUPW and Canada Post hope that they will soon be able to return to work.
