The freezing cold snap is over in Chilliwack and the winter rain is back.
That means that clearing of the catch basins ritual has begun locally in earnest.
City of Chilliwack is asking residents to help its crews’ efforts this week by clearing street drains located in front their homes of any ice and snow.
“Help us keep our roads safe by looking at the curb in front of your home today to see if there is a catch basin close by that you could help keep clear,” according to the city notification.
This is a perennial request during autumn leaf fall or after winter storms, that everyone clears the catch basins if they are able to.
“Help your neighbours if they are not able,” the notice advises. “If possible avoid parking over street drains to allow street sweepers and snow plows to clear to the curb during fall and winter.”
Any residents unsure if they have a catch basin out front can check the online mapping system, or call the Operations Department at 604.793.2810 in the case of a blocked drain.
“Thank you for your assistance in keeping our streets safe!”
