RCMP busy with thefts, mortar discovery, assault, arrests, more

The Elk Valley RCMP responded to 219 calls for service between June 7 and June 23, 2019.

RCMP responded to the following calls: one Breach of Peace; three Assaults; two Assaults with a Weapon; two Break and Enter of a residence; two Break and Enter to a business; one Break and Enter to a seasonal residence; four Cause a Disturbance; 15 Collisions; one Fatal Collision; one Drive Without Due Care and Attention; three Harassing Communications; seven Mischief; one Extortion; four Frauds; one Domestic Disturbance; one Sex Assault; one Sexual Interference; 13 Suspicious Person/vehicle/occurrences; three bike thefts; two Thefts from motor vehicles; three Theft under $5,000; two Theft/Shoplifting; and two Cannabis control Licensing Act.

Nine (9) impaired drivers were stopped by the Elk Valley RCMP resulting in the following: Five 90-day driving prohibitions plus a 30-day impoundment for their vehicles; One 90-day refusal; one Impaired (Criminal Code); One Impaired (Drug); and one three-day immediate roadside prohibition.

Theft of two bicycles – Fernie, BC

On June 07, RCMP received a report that two women’s bicycles were stolen from a garage along 4th Ave. in Fernie. One bike was described as a black Trek “Lush”, worth $2,730 and the second was a red Devinci “Chuck” worth $700. A male and female were captured on CCTV system. The male is described as being thin wearing a flat-brim ball cap and white shoes. The female is described as having light coloured, shoulder-length hair and wearing unique moccasin-style boots just over her ankles. The photographs are available online at Thefreepress.ca.

Recovered Military Ordnance – Elkford, BC

On June 11, RCMP came into possession of a live Korean War era mortar round which was seized and secured with no risk to the public.

The Explosive Disposal Unit from the Joint Forces Command from Victoria attended to Elkford and the mortar round was safely disposed of.

Grave Lake Campground – Camper/trailer Break and Enters

On June 11, RCMP received five separate complaints of items stolen from the campground area. Items stolen included a firearm, three compound bows and a Stihl chainsaw. RCMP also determined that the camper/trailers had been damaged as well. RCMP Forensic Science and Identification Services attended and assisted with the scene examination.

Theft of working tools – Fernie, BC

On June 21, a resident from Fernie woke up to find out that his locked garage had been broken into. Tools that were stolen included a Stihl chainsaw in a travel case; tool tote with all electrical tools; and DeWalt power tools.

Male arrested for assaulting 3 people – Fernie, BC.

On June 16, a male from the Grasmere area was charged with three counts of assault, one of uttering threats and failing to comply with his Probation Order. The injuries to one victim were serious enough to require treatment at hospital. RCMP continue the investigation.
