Crime hotspots in Chilliwack are going to be publicly identified in monthly reports by the Chilliwack RCMP.
Police resources will be deployed to the “hot-spots” in an effort to reduce crime there.
The most recent crime hotspots are:
– Exhibition Park area where there has been a concentration of property crime, including vehicle theft and four thefts from vehicles.
– Yale Road/Williams Road where there has been a concentration of property crime off Gore Avenue up to Bole Avenue between Nowell Street and Charles Street. In a 14-day period there were 10 property crimes reported in the area.
– Wells Road area where there has been a concentration of property crimes off Vedder Road from Briton Avenue up to Knight Road. One business break-in, one residential break-in and two thefts from vehicle have been reported in the area.
Although not currently considered a hotspot, in Greendale the area around Yale Road, Chadsey Road, South Sumas Road and Prairie Central Road has seen an increase in property crime since July. The crime types include residential break-ins, thefts from vehicles and auto theft.
Superintendent Keith Robinson said the hotspot model has been “very effective” in the Upper Fraser Valley RCMP detachment since it was adopted last year from a similar program in New York City.
“It’s an intelligence-led policing model that provides our police managers a gauge of whether we are winning or losing in our effort to be pro-active with crime reduction in the (detachment) area.
An analyst studies the crime statistics in Fraser Valley communities and presents the findings to a police management team, who then select the hotspots.
