There’s less than a month to go in the school year but the ever-vigilant North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP want to remind drivers that school buses are still on the roads and they’ll be paying more attention to the vehicles around them for the remainder of the year.
And just because you don’t see a police cruiser nearby, it doesn’t mean they’re not watching you.
With the installation of cameras on the Cowichan Valley School District’s entire fleet of yellow buses, officers can now locate drivers passing buses that have stopped to drop students off.

According to the RCMP, the number of reports continues to be high, putting students at risk.
“Have you recently passed a stopped yellow school bus? Maybe expect a visit from your friendly neighbourhood police officer…these violation tickets can be issued to the registered owner of the vehicle photographed by the bus camera, months after the offence took place,” said North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP Cpl. Cari Lougheed in a news release.
“Our students have one month of school left this year, lets do our part to keep them safe as they travel to and from our schools,” she said. “If a school bus is stopped don’t pass it.”
