The Ridge Meadows RCMP is investigating a fatal car crash that happened Friday night in Maple Ridge, and asking for dash-camera footage and witnesses.
On Jan. 5, at approximately 7:30 p.m., Ridge Meadows RCMP officers responded to reports of a serious collision on the Haney Bypass near 227 Street. Police arrived on scene to find a white Pontiac Sunfire and a grey Honda Civic with major damage.
Initial reports and eyewitness accounts indicate the Sunfire travelled into an oncoming lane and collided with the Honda Civic, said RCMP on Monday morning.
BC Emergency Health Services and the Maple Ridge Fire Department were at the scene of the collision when police arrived. They had to work to remove people trapped in the wrecked cars.
The driver of the Sunfire, a 39-year-old man from Abbotsford, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

They transported the driver of the Honda Civic to hospital, with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, said police.
A third vehicle, a Kia Rio, was also damaged by flying debris from the crash, but the driver did not sustain any injuries.
The Investigational Support Team and the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Team were called to assist with the investigation, which shut down the Haney Bypass between Burnett Street and 227 Street for several hours after the crash. Speed is believed to be a contributing factor at this time.
Police are still seeking witnesses, dash camera footage and/or surveillance video from the area. If you have information, please contact the Ridge Meadows RCMP directly at 604-463-6251.
Police also advise that if you were a witness at this scene and have been affected in any way, please do not hesitate to contact the Ridge Meadows RCMP Victim Services program at 604-467-7650.
