RCMP to get Safety Bear

The District of Houston is buying a $4,000 Safety Bear costume for the Houston RCMP.

The District of Houston is buying a $4,000 Safety Bear costume for the Houston RCMP.

RCMP Sgt. Stephen Rose requested the costume from council at a meeting in February.

Safety Bear was very popular with the children when the Detachment borrowed the costume from Smithers for several community functions including the Guns and Hoses hockey game.

“It would be good tool to build positive relationships in the community,” said Sgt. Rose.

The $4,790 costume is being paid for primarily through a District fund for the RCMP Auxiliary Program, which gets $2,000 every year.

With the $2,000 surplus from 2013, and $2,000 from 2014, the District is paying $4,000 of the cost.

The RCMP is covering the rest of the costs.
