RCMP use Taser on man in Whalley Safeway

Man suffering mental illness had barricaded himself in the flower cooler.

Surrey Mounties Tasered a mentally ill man this week after he refused to leave the flower cooler at a North Surrey grocery store.

At about noon on Monday, a man entered the Safeway at 103 Avenue and King George Boulevard and began acting irrationally.

He then barricaded himself in the flower cooler.

Police say they made several attempts to communicate with the man, but his aggression did not subside.

Officers then used a Taser and physical force to subdue the man.

The 46-year-old male, known to police, was apprehended under the Mental Health Act and taken to hospital by ambulance for further medical treatment. He is reported to be in stable condition.

None of the customersĀ or staff suffered any injuries during the incident.

Surrey RCMP’s Serious Crime Unit is investigating.
