Feedback on Action Plan
The regional district submitted a letter to the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy to provide feedback on the CleanBC Plastic Action Plan, asking that bans on single-use packaging be executed from a federal or provincial level. The regional district also supports the inclusion of milk and milk-substitute containers in the deposit-refund system, as well as a standardized 10-cent deposit on all containers. Overall, the district supports the move to reduce plastic.
Clearer recycling
The Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine has signed a letter authored by the Thompson-Nicole Regional District to the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy requesting that institutional, commercial and industrial print paper and packaging be included in recycling regulations.
Currently, printed paper and packaging (PPP) is only covered if it is dropped off at a depot by an individual resident or collected in an approved curbside collection program from a residential address. This excludes all PPP material generated by sectors such as hospitals, care homes, schools, businesses and industrial camps.
The letter reads that the exclusion results in added costs to taxpayers and creates confusion as waste sorting requirements are not consistent between home and public spaces. Results from the recent survey conducted for the solid waste management plan by the district indicate expansion of recycling programs is important to regional district residents.
Support for ambulance
The regional district will write a letter to British Columbia Emergency Health Services to support the Kitwanga Community Association efforts to replace the ambulance station there. The association has been raising funds for the last five years to reach its goal of $100,000 and upgrade the ambulance station to better serve the Northwest region with medical services.
Temporary permit granted
Progressive Ventures Ltd. was granted a temporary use permit (TUP) at 3285 Hwy 16 East, Lot 23 for three years by the regional district to lease their property to SkyWay Canada Ltd., a construction company from Alberta supporting major projects in the Northwest.
Progressive Ventures Ltd. purchased the property two years ago but operating a construction company is not permitted as it was originally split zoned as both Highway Commercial (C3) for uses such as hotels or restaurants, and Rural Industrial (RuM) for light industrial uses such as a home-based business. The property will have a temporary office trailer, staff parking, and used for storing construction equipment, mainly scaffolding.
