The Regional District of Nanaimo will evaluate the risk of flood in its electoral areas and the Town of Qualicum Beach thanks to $150,000 from the federal and provincial governments.
In addition to National Disaster Mitigation Program money ($70,000 from Government of Canada and $80,000 from B.C. government), the RDN will see $10,500 in in-kind staff time for a $160,500 project where a risk analysis will be conducted, pinpointing and evaluating flood risks in the region, as well as potential impacts, according to a press release. Community and infrastructure vulnerabilities from overland and shoreline flooding will also be taken into consideration.

Once completed, the risk profile will afford the regional district the opportunity to apply for more money for next steps in the program.
“The funding streams of the NDMP program also include flood mapping, mitigation planning and investments in non-structural and small-scale structural mitigation projects,” the press release said.
The regional district activated its emergency operation centre in late January after heavy rains led to flooding in Parksville and Whiskey Creek and a mudslide in Lantzville.
