A subcommittee will be formed to review and recommend applicants for the Oceanside Services Recreation Grant.
The Oceanside Services Committee of the Regional District of Nanaimo made the recommendation that will be forwarded to the RDN board for approval.
Parksville director Adam Fras made the motion.
“I do think there is value in having us go through the grant applications before we approve them,” said Fras. “While staff administers them and submit them to us, they give suggestions towards eligibility requirements but I don’t think really they gone through them with a fine-tooth comb.”
The Oceanside Services Recreation Grant of $75,000 is geared towards providing funds to District 69 groups and organizations seeking financial aid to offer recreation programs, special events or projects which would benefit specific communities or the district as a whole. The maximum amount $2,500 can be allocated for projects or programs that fall under two categories for youth or community.

Fras said establishing a subcommittee will spare the OSC from reviewing each of the applications and also make sure applicants meet the criteria.
“We don’t want to drag on meetings,” said Fras.
Before the Oceanside Services Committee was formed, it was the Northern Community Economic Development Committee that was given the task of reviewing grant application and making the recommendations. But it was dissolved by directors in the District 69 area as they felt the committee was not needed.
The new grant subcommittee will have three directors to undertake the review and recommendation process. Fras, Electoral Area E director Bob Rogers, Area F director Leanne Salter, Area G director Lehann Wallace and Area H director Stuart McLean expressed willingness to sit on the subcommittee.
