This is the story of the one that didn’t get away – at least not until it was released.
On Aug. 16, a group of fishermen – Alan Urmeneta, Darren Auramenko, Brant Craig and Frank Koch – experienced a true catch of a lifetime.
With assistance from adventure guide Darren Mulrooney, from Lang’s Fishing Adventures, the men nabbed an 11’4 sturgeon in the Fraser River, near Mission.
After landing this white sturgeon (after a 40 minute battle) and tagging it for the Fraser River Sturgeon Conservation Society’s monitoring and assessment program, the men were amazed to discover that it measured 345.44 cm in length and 154.94 cm in girth.
According to the fishing company, those measurements make it tied for the largest “tag and released” white sturgeon on the Fraser River.
This sturgeon is most likely a female and is well over a 100 years old, and is estimated to weigh roughly 800 pounds.
