The B.C. Rural Rights Association (BCRRA) made a recent presentation to the Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD), with some members in attendance saying it felt like the first step in the right direction.
Members formed the BCRRA to address TNRD bylaws involving restrictions placed on living in recreational vehicles that many felt were unfair.
BCRRA spokesperson, Tom Coles, was at the Oct. 17 meeting and said some of the TNRD board members at least seemed receptive to what the group was saying.
“I think (the meeting) went well; that seems to be the consensus at least,” said Coles, adding TNRD board members gave the impression those living in R.V.s on private land are okay to do so for the time being.
Some of the potential compromises mentioned in allowing R.V.s to be used as residences involved conditions that address sewage disposal, to which all parties present said was agreeable.

Cole said the next step is for the TNRD regional directors to meet and discuss the situation and come up with suggestions as to what changes can be made before making a presentation to the entire board, which might not happen until as late as February.
“But at least they’re moving forward, so we’re having some kind of effect and they know the light is on them now; they are elected to represent the majority will of the people and 85 per cent of (those who participated) in their own poll said they were in favour of R.V.s,” Coles added, referring to a survey the TNRD put out regarding R.V.s used as dwellings in the regional district.
“If this doesn’t pan out the way people are expecting, then there’s the political alternative come election time — we’ll remember this and we’ll be loud and vocal. We will haunt every possible spot they’ll be speaking and demand answers from candidates.”
