The North Okanagan’s new recycling collection company has been launched despite some equipment delays.
Some residents may have noticed that all recyclables are tossed into the same compartments of the truck when Emterra Environmental rolls up to the curb.
But that will soon change as the delivery of new trucks is awaited.
“We are collecting the material at the curb in single stream trucks until our two stream trucks arrive at the end of the month,” said Ed Walsh, vice president of operations.
The time line for delivery is June 1 and in the meantime recyclables are still being sorted.
“We take the recycling material to Cascades in Kelowna and they are able to sort single stream and two stream material so all the material gets looked after,” said Walsh.
So far the collection has gone well, but issues always arise anytime you change collection systems, he said.
“More questions than concerns.”
The end result will be fewer items in the landfill.
“We expect to see a significant increase in volume when you switch to a reusable blue box system, from a blue bag system, so we are anticipating more tonnes recycled.”
