Recycling model trashed

Mike Macnabb says there needs to be monitoring of recycling items entering the trash stream

One politician warns that landfills may become full of items previously recycled.

Director Mike Macnabb told his Regional District of North Okanagan colleagues Wednesday that he has heard numerous public complaints about the new recycling model mandated by the provincial government.

“People are getting so frustrated. They say they can’t figure it out and they’re putting the items into the landfill,” he said.

“A lot of plastic film and bags are not being accepted by Mutli-Material B.C. and it has to go somewhere and it’s going into the landfill.”

Under the MMBC program, plastic wrap and bags cannot be placed into the curbside bins used for paper, tin cans and plastic containers. They must be taken to one of the two collection depots in the North Okanagan – both of which are in Vernon.

Macnabb says there needs to be monitoring of recycling items entering the trash stream and if the amount grows, the regional district must consider options.

“Maybe we get (MMBC managing director) Allen Langdon’s home address and keep sending it there,” he said.

RDNO staff report that there will be audits at local landfills to determine if recyclable material is being trashed by residents.
