The Regional District of Nanaimo wants to improve its communications systems during emergency situations.
The RDN wants to purchase an emergency communications trailer to serve as a designated mobile space where vital radio messages can be relayed to an emergency operation centre in the event of a disaster.
Approximately $40,000 has already been budgeted from reserves for the purchase of EOC trailer. The RDN is now looking for grants to help with the cost that will also include purchase of digital emergency support service kits and group lodging supplies to be stored around the region for quick activation if commercial accommodations are not available.
Staff has asked the RDN board to endorsed a grant application for $25,000 to the Union of British Columbia Municipalities community emergency preparedness plan for the regional district’s ESS modernization project that will be implemented in 2021.

The communications trailer can be relocated anywhere and will feature five workstations to support radio communications for the entire district. First responder radio frequencies, amateur radios and satellite communications will be connected, allowing for direct communications between the RDN, first responders, amateur radio operators, municipal partners, EMBC and neighbouring jurisdictions.
The RDN has been co-ordinating with the Town of Qualicum Beach and the City of Parksville to develop a group lodging plan for the PQB area. Group lodging can provide shelter for people impacted by a disaster who are unable to stay in their homes and when other types of accommodation are not available.
It is also being planned for Electoral Area B (Gabriola, DeCourcy, Mudge Islands).
