Emergencies happen and the Regional District of Nanaimo is making new technology accessible to help residents be the first to know.
The RDN announced in a press release that as of this week, it has moved to a new emergency and information alert system. The Voyent Alert system, already used by the City of Nanaimo, City of Parksville and Town of Qualicum Beach, will alert residents via an app, text message, voice call or e-mail in case of emergencies such as extreme weather or wildfires. Residents, if they wish, can also opt to keep tabs on “day-to-day communications such as … public notices for recreation and parks alerts, watermain flushing and more,” the release noted.
The RDN said Voyent Alert allows users to receive alerts for multiple locations, for example, home, school and work.
“Enhancing our communications with a new alert system allows the public various ways to receive direct and timely information from the RDN regarding emergencies and our services throughout the region” said Ian Thorpe, RDN chairman, in the release. “We strongly encourage the public to sign up.”
The region’s previous emergency notification alert system will no longer be used after Oct. 1. To sign up for the new system or to find out more, visit http://rdn.bc.ca/voyent-alert.
