It’s been a great hockey season for Nakusp native Greyson Reitmeier.
On top of earning a scholarship to Michigan Tech, where he will be studying and playing hockey, Reitmeier was recently named Player of the Year for the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL).
“It feels really good, I’m definitely excited that I got to win it,” he said. “It’s a big honour and a great award to win, so being able to have that opportunity to win it and actually win it, I feel very lucky.”
This is Reitmeier’s third and final season with the Flin Flon Bombers, and his teammates and coaches couldn’t be prouder of him.
“We have seen nothing but growth from Greyson since we acquired him two seasons ago,” said Mike Reagan, head coach and general manager of the Bombers in a news release. “We knew he had the potential to get a scholarship when he came here, he’s big, skates well, and has a great offensive vision. He’s done nothing but contribute for us.”
In order to determine which players will receive an award coaches from the SJHL have a meeting and vote.
Along with Player of the Year there are awards for Rookie of the Year, Defenseman of the Year, and Most Valuable Player (MVP).
Rookie of the year is given to who the coaches think is the best first year player. Defenseman of the Year is the best defensive player. Player of the year is more of an overall award, and MVP is basically who they think is the most valuable player to a team.
This is Reitmeier’s first time winning Player of the Year.
Because this is his last year he felt it was important to have a good one. Being chosen for this award and receiving his scholarship to Michigan Tech have definitely helped make that happen.
In regard to his time with the Bombers, Reitmeier has nothing but fond memories.
“I’ve loved it here,” he said. “Ever since I came up here last year it’s been great. I’ve been treated really well here and I’ve been given a great opportunity to succeed and to be able to accomplish the things that I have makes it even better, so I’ve really enjoyed my time here with the Bombers.”
