Instead of gathering in gymnasiums for Remembrance Day ceremonies, students gathered in their classrooms to watch a video broadcast throughout Chilliwack School District 33 on Tuesday.
The ‘Chilliwack School District Remembers’ video was broadcast live on Nov. 10 and opened with a traditional welcome at the Stó:lō Nation cenotaph at 10:30 a.m.
The ceremony featured various livestream and pre-recorded video clips including: O Canada performed by Mt. Slesse Grade 8 band and Vedder middle school students, the song Building a Bridge to Peace sung by Unsworth elementary, The Story of Piper Richardson performed by SD33 students, Stó:lō Travelling Song by Chilliwack middle school, Amazing Grace sung by Chilliwack secondary choir, an In Flanders Fields montage, and Last Post/Reveille by trumpeter Calvin Demont Belginer of Sardis secondary.
Following a moment of silence, students watched via a livestream video as Interim Superintendent Rohan Arul-Pragasam laid a wreath at Veterans Memorial Park in downtown Chilliwack as Cheam elementary principal, Iain Gardner, played the bagpipes.
The special Remembrance ceremony concluded with a closing statement by Arul-Pragasam.
