Replacement of Beaton Road Bridge in Kamloops set to begin

Construction will begin March 2, closing the east end of the road to all traffic

Construction will soon take place on Beaton Road in Kamloops to replace a temporary bridge structure with a permanent one.

According to a media release from the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, the east end of Beaton Road will be completely closed to traffic beginning March 2. A detour via Gardi Road and Buckhorn Drive will be in place for local traffic.

The ministry says the temporary crossing could not be maintained as the new bridge is built due to a lack of space, but the full closure will help to expedite construction and lower overall costs.

A digital message sign has been installed on Highway 1 to alert drivers of the closure.

Work is estimated to be completed April 30.

The temporary crossing was installed after flood waters from Cherry Creek washed out the road in spring 2018.

The new single-lane bridge will include rock armouring designed to protect it from future high-water events, as well as improve safety for people travelling through the area, according to the ministry.

The project is part of the Cherry Creek flood recovery work that included new structures installed on Rodeo Drive and Greenstone Road in 2019 to replace washed out culverts from the 2017 floods.

The ministry “appreciates the patience of all drivers and residents in the area affected by the flooding and repair work.”
