Following a string of complaints, Revelstoke RCMP are reminding pedestrians and cyclists to be visible this winter.

“Pedestrians and cyclists are very hard to see if they’re wearing dark clothing,” said Staff Sgt. Kurt Grabinsky.

He is urging people to stop risking their lives and to be visible in the dark.

Interior Health reports that the fall sees an increase in pedestrian accidents across the Southern Interior.

Dr. Heather Wilson, a general surgeon and medical director of Interior Health’s Trauma Services Network offered some tips in a fall column about staying safe as a pedestrian:Wear high-visibility clothing and carry a flashlight if you are walking in the evening.Distraction of any kind on the road can spell disaster. When you are walking, focus your full attention on the road around you. Put the phone away.Cross at intersections and use traffic signals and cross walks.Make eye contact with drivers to ensure they see you.Use particular caution when crossing driveways and alley entrances. Drivers may not expect you to be there or see you.

According to Environment Canada, the sunset in Revelstoke is at 3:48 p.m. tonight.
