The population of Revelstoke dropped by almost 100 people in the past five years, according to the latest data from Statistics Canada.
The results from the 2011 census show the population of the City of Revelstoke declined to 7,139 people in 2011 from 7,230 in 2006. That represents a 1.3 per cent decline.
The population of rural Revelstoke, which stretches from Mica in the north to Trout Lake in the south, also declined. According to the census, the population in 2011 was 552 people, down from 706 in 2006.
These numbers run counter to expectations that Revelstoke’s population would remain largely unchanged; BC Stats projected the population for the region to be 7,924 people in 2011, compared to 7,936 in 2006.
As a whole, the province of British Columbia increased by seven per cent to 4,400,057. The population of Canada increased by 5.9 per cent to 33,476,688.
