Reynolds secondary – perhaps better known for top-notch musicians and soccer players who pass through its hallways – now has yet another title to boast.
Students at the Saanich school took first place at last month’s inaugural B.C. High School Poetry Slam Championship.
The team, which features students Savannah-Rain McDermott (Grade 10), Kanika Jackson (Grade 11), Holly Lam (Grade 10), Zoe Duhaime (Grade 11) and Jenn Bellas (Grade 11), beat out 17 other schools at the Hullabaloo Festival in Vancouver to earn top spot.
“I think (slam poetry) is a really important thing for teenagers simply because it showed me that I have people who do want to listen, and are interested in my opinion, and because it helped me to discover what I am capable of,” McDermott said.
Poetry slams are competitions where poets perform original works and are judged by audience members.
