• Residents of Columbia Beach were casting one eye warily upward. They’re on the look out for a rogue eagle that injured one person and threatened many others. Linda Knudsen suffered injuries to her head and neck when a bald eagle struck her from behind on as she was walking her dog on a leash. She needed two or three stitches and a tetanus shot.

• Parksville RCMP were under fire in the realm of public opinion for what some perceived as overkill in the shooting of a black bear last weekend. 

Four shotgun rounds and three rounds from a 9 mm handgun were used to dispatch a two-year-old male black bear in Parksville. The bear was in a highly populated area.

 • The Regional District of Nanaimo approved a local pilot project to test recycled sewer sludge as a forest fertilizer. The resulting product called Nutrifor was a digested de-watered sludge, touted as a superior to most commercial fertilizers.
