Rollover crash in South Surrey leaves one in critical condition

One person airlifted following incident near 40 Avenue and 160 Street

One man was airlifted to hospital in critical condition following a single-vehicle rollover crash in South Surrey Monday afternoon that trapped a driver in a water-filled ditch.

The incident occurred just before 5 p.m., near 40 Avenue and 160 Street.

According to Surrey RCMP, the crash occurred when the driver of a Dodge 3500 pickup that was eastbound on 40 Avenue near 160 Street “swerved to avoid a collision with the vehicle in front of him, which had slowed down.”

“The belief is that the car in front slowed down and he either did not see it in time, or reacted too slow,” Cpl. Elenore Sturko told Peace Arch News.

The manoeuvre sent the truck into the ditch, where it “became partially submerged in water, trapping the driver,” a news release states.

Emergency crews extracted a 52-year-old Cloverdale resident from the truck.

While 40 Avenue was closed to traffic between 160 and 168 Streets following the crash, Sturko confirmed Tuesday morning that it has since reopened.

The Mounties’ Criminal Collision Investigation Team is investigating, and anyone who witnessed the crash or has video of what transpired is asked to call the detachment at 604-599-0502.
