The first new face has entered the race for city council – indeed he’s been planning this for some time.
Aaron Brookes announced his intentions on his Facebook page last November, but campaigning has been low-key so far.
Brookes was born and raised in Salmon Arm and moved away at 18 to join the Royal Canadian Navy.
After eight years of military service, Brookes was medically released and returned home. His wife Kate and daughter Audrey joined him in returning to Salmon Arm.

Now, after giving eight years of service to Canada, Brookes hopes he can serve his hometown, as well.
His desire to serve on city council stems from the belief that everyone should have the opportunity to succeed and a lack of action by the current city council.
“With the cost of housing rising disproportionate to the increase in wages, fewer and fewer residents of Salmon Arm can afford the necessities of life. The growing number of residents who are forced to live with their parents or choosing between food and rent is unconscionable in a municipality as prosperous as Salmon Arm.” he said in a statement to the Observer.
There are six seats for Salmon Arm city council plus one for mayor.
