Most elementary schools in Mission continue to be at the bottom half of the Fraser Institute‘s report card.
The only two schools in Mission that ranked above the half way mark out of 978 schools in B.C. are Hatzic and Hillside.
Based on academic tests written by Grade 4 and 7 students, Hatzic is listed in 363 place in the latest school report. It has been improving its rating over the past three years from 5.0 out of 10 in 2012, to 5.9 in 2013, and 6.5 in 2014.
Hilliside’s ratings have also improved over the past three years since it was turned into a traditional academy in 2013. The school earned 4.7 points out of 10 in 2012, 5.9 in 2013, and 6.0 in 2014.
Edwin S. Richards is the most improved school in the district with a 5.1 rating in 2014, compared to 3.5 in 2013 and 3.7 in 2012.
According to the Fraser Institute, every school is capable of improvement regardless of the type of school and location. There are a total of 13 elementary schools in Mission.
The Fraser Institute uses results from the controversial Foundation Skills Assessments tests as one of several measures to rank schools. The tests, administered by the Ministry of Education, assesses students’ reading, writing, and numeracy skills.
The report gives parents information about a school’s academic program and performance, but critics say other factors need to be considered in the rankings, such as support in the classroom and engagement in other activities.
