Rossland city council allows The Flying Steamshovel to change operating hours

The restaurant hopes to soon offer a brunch service on weekends with the decision

Rossland city council has decided to let the The Flying Steamshovel change their operating hours to allow for a brunch service on weekends.

According to a report by city planner Stacey Lightbourne, no comments were received during a public consultation process about the change in hours.

The report also said that there wouldn’t be big increases in noise since the restaurant only wants to open and close one hour earlier on weekends.

Restaurant owner Dan D’amour said while he still needs to receive a permit from the B.C. Liquor Distribution Branch to move ahead with the new operating hours, he said he expects to receive it in the mail shortly.

Once the permit is received, the restaurant will be open from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. from Monday to Thursday, 3 p.m. to 12 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on weekends.

The new hours will help the restaurant recover financially from the COVID-19 crisis, according to D’amour.

“A big part of our business used to be playing live music for all of our guests,” said D’amour.

“Hopeful offering brunch will help to give us that boost in revenue that we’ve recently lost.”

Bands from across the province have visited the restaurant to perform live music for guests.

The restaurant is located at 2003 Second Ave. in Rossland.
