The Rossland Rotary Club is accepting applications to send one student between 16 and 18 years old on an expense-paid trip to Ottawa, Ont.
Rotary’s Adventure in Citizenship brings 200 students from across Canada together in Ottawa to hear from speakers, participate in a mock-election, tour the city, visit a national museum, tour the Parliament Buildings, meet with foreign and Canadian diplomats, learn about human rights, witness a citizenship ceremony and more — all over four days from April 29 to May 2.
This year Rossland Rotary has secured a spot to send one student and the organization is looking for students who are Canadian citizens and 16 (before May 2) to 18 years old with excellent academic standing, leadership abilities and a passion for community service to apply.
The trip is fully paid for and Rossland Rotary Club will even pay for the accepted student’s flight to Ottawa, which not every Rotary Club can do.
All of the B.C. students meet up in Vancouver and fly to Ottawa, and a past participant said that experience was one of the best parts of the trip, according to Rotarian Steve Cutt.
Preference will be given to Rossland students and applications can be obtained from councillors at the Seven Summits Centre for Learning and at JL Crowe Secondary School.
The deadline is Thursday, Feb. 15.
The student who is selected will have the chance to enter the Adventure in Citizenship essay and video contest, which requires either 250 words or a 30-to-90-second video on what being Canadian means to them.
