Rotary Club of Terrace donates $10,000 to Dr. REM Lee Hospital Foundation

Mills Memorial Hospital is closer to having a new ultrasound machine, thanks to a $10,000 donation from the Rotary Club of Terrace.

On June 24, former Rotary Club of Terrace president Brian Downie and incoming President Tony DeViveiros presented a cheque to Dr. REM Lee Hospital Foundation chair Ron Bartlett and board member Dr. Geoff Appleton.

“This project caught our attention as more and more residents need this service and and it is also key to training imaging students and keeping them in the northwest,” said Downie.

“It’s a win for everybody.”

The money will go towards a new dual ultrasound with echo-cardiogram worth over $200,000 for the imaging department of Mills Memorial Hospital.

Bartlett said that since last year the hospital has hosted students from the College of New Caledonia in Prince George for training. As that program has grown, there has also been a regional increase in demand for ultrasound tests.

The imaging department has two new hires starting in Jan. 2021, so the foundation would like to have the new ultrasound in place by the end of this year.

“A new machine will enable the imaging department to provide more booked cases each day, decrease wait times and allow sufficient training for students,” stated a June 24 Dr. REM Lee Hospital Foundation news release.

The foundation is also attempting to raise $28,000 to replace a bathing tub for residents with limited mobility at Terraceview Lodge’s Sunshine Centre. The old bathing tub was in service for over 30 years, but no longer functions.
