Attempts are being made to silence any noise conflicts.
Regional District of North Okanagan staff will investigate the cost of doing a study on noise levels in industrial areas in the five electoral areas.
“There are always complaints about mills being too loud,” said Mike Macnabb, BX-Silver Star director.
“With a study, we could go out during the day when industry is operating and get a benchmark on the noise being generated.”
Macnabb hopes that any information on noise levels would be passed on to industrial companies and adjacent neighbours.
“We can go back to the public with the decibel level and by informing the mills about the decibel level, they can do something about it,” he said.
The push for a study has come from Jackie Pearase, outgoing rural Enderby director.
“We have new (noise monitoring) equipment so a study would give us a baseline so we can see if the parameters we set are effective,” she said of the existing noise bylaw.
Like Macnabb, Pearase believes a study will create awareness among businesses and residents.
“It’s not meant to be a hammer,” she said.
