Rutland pride spills over

Reaction to a story this weekend was clear and worth a second read

Would a neighbourhood by any other name be as sweet?

If it’s Rutland you’re talking about, the answer is simply, don’t mess with the name. Rutland is a name and community people are proud of and the reaction we got to a story on the subject was tremendous. Take a minute to read some of the comments on the story for a Family Day dose of community pride.

Now what about the rest of Kelowna? Any neighbourhood names that could be reworked?

Roxanne Stewart Rutland should remain Rutland. I am from Rutland and proud of it❤️! If Rutland even remotely resembled Compton, I’m sure BCIT would not have put a campus there for all to access. There are bad apples everywhere, don’t judge the masses by the behaviours of a few. If you are not happy being in town..move. Changing the name will not improve the behaviour of one set on doing wrong. I am ‘Straight Outta Rutland”!

Alex Draper All season the Kelowna Chiefs have proudly used the hash tag ” Straight out of Rutland” we are very, very proud to play in the Rutland Arena!

Bill Clarke For those that want history to remain, you do know it was previously referred to as Hooterville…..

Andy Mallach It’s not like it means anything about being in a rut! Get over it people!

I feel it would be disrespectful to the history of the town to change it.

It’s just typical people trying to find fault where there isn’t any.

Angela Lavigne RUTLAND FOREVER!!! Rutland pride!

Ed Donald The higher ups changed Westbanks name are you going to let them change Rutland’s to?

Corinna R. Stobbe I’ve been in Rutland for about 26 years now. Went to elementary, middle and high school here. This is where I’m proud to say I have lived for so long. The name doesn’t need to be changed whatsoever!

Vivian Evans No. I’m not spending any of my money or time on changing a name. Rutland has a significant historical significance to this area.

Eric Juzwishyn “I love Rutland, I live in Rutland, it is a very nice community but the name does not reflect the real condition in Rutland. The name implies something less than it truly is,” said Bill Pittman who has lived in Rutland for 4 years. Well bill if you don’t like the name Rutland, maybe you should GTF out of Rutland. You have been here for 4 years… been here for over 40

Patti Mellish this is so ridiculous…..besides being an amazing place to live and raise your kids….and I know because I have lived in Rutland 21 years, my son born and raised……changing the name will do nothing, maybe it isn’t the most glamorous name but it is a name that invokes pride in many, many people, as well it should…..there is bad pockets in every part of this city, but here in Rutland, there is also an incredible sense of community.

Tom Elder Keep the name, there’s nothing wrong with Rutland. Family of mine moved to Rutland in 1974 and have been there ever since.
