Thousands of customers were without power most or all of the day yesterday as winds gusted up to 100 km/h in the Saanich Peninsula. A tree fell on a house on Summergate Boulevard, roads were littered with branches and garbage, signs broke, hats were lost and pedestrians were thrashed about in the wild weather.
Few businesses on Beacon Avenue in Sidney were open, but the 3rd Street Cafe prospered, as one of the few food establishments with power. Customers cued up for a table in a warm and lit atmosphere most of the day.
B.C. Ferries was forced to cancel all sailings between Swartz Bay and Tsawwassen, until the 3 p.m. sailing.
Without power until 1 p.m. and a paper to produce, the News Review was regrettably unable to update its website to inform its readers of developments throughout the day.
Many residents expressed not seeing such a violent storm in some time.
