‘Max’ tops the list of most popular dog names in the District of Saanich for 2018 with 288 of them.
And chances are, if you see a Max at a local Saanich park, he or she will be black, as more than half of the 7,526 dogs that registered with Saanich last year were listed as black.
This week the District of Saanich released all top-five of its most popular 2018 dog names, breeds and colours ahead of its campaign for 2019 dog licenses.

This year is different as dog owners can no longer register or pay to licence their dogs at recreation centres. Instead, Saanich has had great feedback that its online system is quick and easy, said Tara Zajac, Saanich spokesperson.

“Residents can pay for their dog licence quickly and securely online [at saanich.ca/dogs],” Zajac said.
Residents can also pay for their licence at Saanich municipal hall or by mail.
Licences are free for dogs which have been neutered or spayed within the last 12 months or are a guide dog.
Saanich residents licensed 7,526 dogs in 2018. The top five dogs by breed were Labrador cross 1,385, Labrador 1,372, golden retriever 1,117, Shih Tzu 595 and German Shepherd 593.
Saanich’s top five dogs by name in 2018 were Max 288, Charlie 261, Buddy 252, Molly 251 and Bailey 243.
Saanich’s top five colours of dogs are black 4,114, white 2,056, black and white 1,413, black and tan 1,208, and brown 1,287.
Worth ‘pawsing’ for, Saanich also had 34 service dogs in 2018. Only six of Saanich’s 170-plus parks have dog restrictions.
