Quarterback Gideone Kremler capped off his four years at Mount Douglas secondary schools with four touchdowns — three on the ground, one through the air — as the Rams ran over the New Westminster Hyacks 48-24 to claim the Subway Bowl triple-A championship in provincial high school football.
Saturday’s victory at B.C. Place over the defending champions coached by TSN football analyst Farhan Lalji gave the Rams’ victory their fifth title in the past eight years, sparking talks of a dynasty among alumni.

Congrats to @mtdougfootball on a well deserved win in the #SubwayBowl.
Very proud of my @HyackFootball team for battling hard all season and getting back to the big game. This senior class leave with 3 championship game appearances in 4 years and 2 rings. #SHARP @BCHSFB— Farhan Lalji (@FarhanLaljiTSN) December 2, 2018
The Rams won the double-A crown in 2009, then made five straight triple-A finals between 2011-15, winning four of them. They had advanced to Saturday’s final after beating the Vancouver College Fighting Irish 31-28 on a game-winning 27-yard field goal by kicker Jackson Reid.

Saturday’s victory certainly completed a personal circle of accomplishment for Kremler. He had won the provincial title as a ninth grader and put up impressive numbers on his way to winning the game’s Most Valuable Player, completing 11 of 16 passes for 197 yards and one touchdown to Sebastian Hansen. Kremler also rushed for 106 yards and three TDs.
Saturday’s game opened with Kremler fumbling the ball on the first play from scrimmage, leading to a five-yard touchdown run by Kremler’s opposite, New Westminster quarterback Kinsale Phillip. But the Rams responded with three touchdowns in racing out to a 21-6 lead through the second quarter.

While New Westminster pulled back within nine points before the intermission, Kremler’s twin brother Zairech raised the Rams’ lead to 16 early in the third quarter with a nine-yard-run to make it 28-12.
A Hyacks’ touchdown midway through the third quarter narrowed the Rams’ lead to 10 points, but a Rams touchdown late in the third quarter restored their sizable lead and denied New Westminster any chance of a comeback like last year’s, when the Hyacks won the title on the final play of the game with a two-point convert following a touchdown.
This history earned Saturday’s game considerable interest, but in the end it was the Rams’ dominating performance that denied the Hyacks a chance to defend their title.
