Sale of Trout Creek Elementary School unlikely

While the future of the Trout Creek Elementary School building is still unknown, it is unlikely the building will go up for sale.

While the future of the Trout Creek Elementary School building is still unknown, it is unlikely the building will go up for sale.

“It’s not an advantage for us to sell the property,” said Linda Van Alphen, chair of the Okanagan Skaha School Board.

On March 9, the school board voted to close three schools, including Trout Creek. The decision was made as a result of declining enrolment figures.

Trout Creek Elementary School has an enrolment of 182 students, in a building with a capacity of 277 students.

The school has an area of 2,471 square metres. It occupies a two-hectare property. It was built in 1956 and has undergone renovations and additions until 1970.

Van Alphen said the school board has the option to board up the building or lease it.

So far, the board has not been contacted by anyone interested in leasing the facility.

While the building could be sold, Van Alphen said the school district would not benefit from such a decision.

Only 25 per cent of the proceeds from the sale would go to the school district. The rest would go to the province.
