A winner has been chosen for the Salmar Award of Excellence.

Taking this year’s $1,000 award is Rebecca Howard. Howard, from Silver Creek, has excelled as an equestrian and, since 2006, has been the equestrian director at The Fork Stables in Norwood, North Carolina.

Last year she was selected as one of six Canadian horse and rider pairs to make up the Canadian Eventing Team.

Eventing includes dressage, cross-country jumping and stadium jumping.

She now has her sights set on the Olympic Games in London.

The award is given to an individual who has attained an outstanding level of skill or expertise in the field of performing arts or athletics.

Entrants must be recognized at the provincial or national level. By their performance, the successful recipient has brought recognition to themselves and the Shuswap.

Past recipients include three-time Olympic swimmer Rick Say, who won the inaugural award in 2005; ballet dancers Eric Nipp and Marisa Gomez; cross-country skier Jesse Heckrodt; basketball player Lani Gibbons; and opera singer Stephanie Nakagawa.
