The Bella Coola Valley Awards Foundation is pleased to announce that Finn Carlson of Hagensborg, a student at Sir Alexander Mackenzie School, has received a $500 grant for summer studies at the UBC School of Music.

Finn is a talented young musician whose passion is the trumpet. His music education started with piano lessons at the age of six, and progressed through the fiddle with Janice Kyle and guest workshop leaders.

In Grade Six, although underage, he was given special permission to play his baritone horn with the Honour Band at a Sun Peaks festival. Shortly after that he switched to the trumpet, which he practices hours a day. He can even be heard in the summer at Shearwater and Lizzie Cove as he works with his parents on their charter business, and carries his trumpet along.

The Awards Foundation is a Registered Charity that has provided financial assistance to local students of the arts since 1991. Originally a committee of the Bella Coola Valley Arts Council, since becoming formally registered in 1991, the Foundation has been administered by five trustees, appointed by various community organizations. Previous award recipients include Danika Nacarrella and Lyle Mack. The Foundation also supports student band initiatives and the annual Bella Coola Valley Festival of the Arts.
