Frosty the Snowman greeted people as they entered Vavenby Community Hall on Saturday evening, Dec. 10, to celebrate the Community Christmas potluck dinner.
A band from Clearwater, the Silvertones, played Christmas songs before and after supper.
The hall was beautifully decorated by organizer Barb Pennell and her seven volunteers. Pennell also made the table ornaments.
Pennell started the evening off with a speech. She thanked Vavenby Trails and Recreation Society for sponsoring the event, mentioned how glad she was to see everyone there, and welcomed all of the new families.
Then it was time to eat. The band got to go first. There was a large variety of food and desserts brought by the approximately 80 adults and children, enough for everyone to end up overstuffed, so no one needed to worry that there wouldn’t be enough for them.
After dinner Pennell presented each of her helpers with a thank you gift. Then, to the children’s delight, Santa and Mrs. Claus showed up from the North Pole. Nearly all of the children sat on Santa’s knee and a few adults stood by his side to tell him what they wanted for Christmas. They all received a goodie bag.
Most people, all with cheerful faces, had left the hall by 8 p.m.
Primary school puts on concert
On Tuesday, Dec. 13, the Vavenby Primary School put on their Christmas concert. There was a large audience of parents and grandparents.
The students performed three Christmas songs, the first being Frosty the Snowman. One of the children was Frosty. The next two songs were Rocking Around the Christmas Tree and Here Comes Santa Claus. The children sang with enthusiasm, movement, and smiles.
In between the songs the students came out in pairs to say what their favourite part of Christmas was. They spoke clearly and loud so everyone could hear.
This was teacher Bryan Cederholm’s first concert and he did a fantastic job of getting these young children ready.
School ended on Dec. 16 for the holidays so drive carefully.
Rink ready for skaters
With these very low temperatures the outside rink near Vavenby Community Hall has been flooded a few times and is ready to skate on.
When using it please shovel it off again. Those willing to volunteer their time with the rink should phone Kevin Sheffield at 250 – 676 – 0078.
