It will soon cost international students wishing to attend Nanaimo school district schools a little more money.
At Wednesday’s school board meeting, trustees voted to increase international student tuition fees by $500 to $12,000 per student per year, bringing local fees in line with what Qualicum and Cowichan school districts are charging.
This school year, the district had 225 full-time international students and the fee change would increase revenues by more than $100,000 if these numbers are maintained, although the district pays a 15-per cent commission to agents on tuition.
The homestay application fee is also increasing to $250 from $150 and the fee changes takes effect in the 2014-15 school year.
The fee increase was suggested by a consultant the district hired earlier this year to make recommendations on what should go in a 10-year facilities plan
