Reducing the distance students have to walk to school has gone off course.
North Okanagan-Shuswap School District trustees won’t direct the policy committee to review the current walk limits in the bus transportation regulation.
Chris Coers, Enderby trustee, said that in good conscience, she scouldn’t agree to looking at changing the policy when the board is facing a budget shortfall.
She pointed out the district already spends more money on busing than the government provides the district with.
“We just finished a review of the transportation department and made major changes to cut money from transportation. If we change walk limits, it will cost us more money and we just don’t have it.”
Presently, the district uses the provincial walking standard which is four kilometres for kindergarten to Grade 3 and 4.8 kilometres for Grades 4 to 12.
There had previously been some suggestion to the transportation committee that the distances are too far.
