School District 51 looking into green bin composting

School District 51 (SD51) will be looking at various district initiatives for the 2012-2013 school year, including a green bin composting initiative.

Superintendent of Schools Michael Strukoff noted that there are number of green initiatives and district assessments under the Achievement Contract for this school year.

“One of the things that we’re going to try and capitalize on is the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary’s composting program,” he said. “We’re in touch with the regional district about it and a lot of our schools are involved on different levels.”

Strukoff stated the biggest challenge at this point is what will be done with the compost.

“In Grand Forks, we hope to have a solution for them to pick them it up with the new green bin program,” he explained. “You can see what products are available now and I know, talking to a few schools in the West Boundary, having access to a green box would help because they do have a

better opportunity to dispose of their compost.”

Ideas for the green initiative programs are still being discussed.
