The vacant Buffalo Creek School near 100 Mile House is among six properties for sale in the Cariboo-Chilcotin. School District #27 (SD27) declared multiple properties as surplus and is offering them for sale as of Nov. 16 at www.bcbid.ca.
The minimum bid for the Buffalo Creek School on Canim-Hendrix Road, which closed in 2013, is $120,000.
A teacherage site at Deka Lake is up for $85,000 and a Sharpe Lake property in 70 Mile is up for $35,000.
Also included in the sale are SD27 properties in Red Stone ($30,000) and Williams Lake ($30,00) and the Kwaleen Elementary School in Williams Lake ($270,000), which closed in 2013.
There’s a cost involved with keeping vacant buildings and vacant property, says SD27 chair Tanya Guenther.
“If it’s not being utilized and if we can sell the asset and have those funds available for other capital projects, I think it makes sense.”
While the funds from any asset sale would stay within SD27, those funds are considered restricted capital, Guenther explains.
“Anything that’s restricted capital, we have to have ministry approval for the projects that it’s spent on.”
